Week 15 - Starting design of Beehive

This week I am beginning to start to design my hive. Firstly I have to get the exact measurements of my wooden hive in order to make my design as accurate as well. 

So I went over to my wooden hive and got the measurements and record them on a sheet of paper, this can be seen on the left here. I measured all the parts of the hive, this includes the floor, broad box, super box, crown board and the roof. I then worked out how long, wide and thick all the different parts of the hive have to be.

When working out the measurements, it was easier to know that all the parts in the hive have the same length and thickness, this is because the hive has to sit flush on-top of each over exactly. Apart from the fact that two of the ends on one frame are the same an the other two are different.

Now that I have the measurements of the hive I can now start on the design of the hive that I will build, and I will use this design I will make now to help create the hive.

I will base my design of the beehive of this design, the same beehive that I will be building, that I found online.  
My design will very similar to this design, but I will put the measurements of the different frames next to it, and I will also draw and individual design for each of the  frames that I will build.

How this helped me?
This has helped me understand what my design of the hive should look like and what I need to include in the design. Also with the sizes I have of my wooden hive, I now have a much better idea of how big this hive is going to be and what sizes I need to cut the wood down too. When designing the hive, I will also have to take into account the handles of the hive and any extra parts that I will be adding as well.

The different parts of a hive are:   Bottom Board/Floor Is the foundation of the hive, it is where all the bees enter and exit the hive. It is also what the hive sits on top of and therefore holds the entire weight. It also has a mesh floor that allows for unwanted debris to fall through when the bees do not need it. Week 19 - Design and label the super and build it

This week I am starting to design the super box of the hive and I will also label it as well. The super box is basically the same as the brood box in every way, the only difference being that it is smaller than the brood box. The main purpose of the super box is to act as an area or space for the bees to store honey and keep it there until it is needed, also in the Winter months it can also  provide an 'extra area of space' for the bees. If there is no extra brood box (or there is one needed), the super box can be used to act as a brood box as it is exactly the same in every way, except that the brood box has far more depth. Week 23 - Extra parts that need finishing off

  Roof For the finishing off of the hive there are a few things that need to be done. First I am starting on the roof, for the roof I need to add insulation in the gap left in the middle that you can see in the photograph to the left. I am doing this because it will help the bees in the colder months to regulate the hives temperature, by keeping the bees warmer for longer. In this picture I am cutting the piece of board that is an offcut from the board I used to make the crown board. It is the perfect size for the gap in the roof, and it will help to keep the insulation in place. I am only cutting abut 10mm from the end of the board just so it can fit in. I am using the saw because I am only removing 10mm - this would be too difficult and potentially too dangerous to use the circular saw  as it could cause injuries.
