Week 16 - Continuing and finishing the design of the hive

This week I continued my design of the beehive that I will be building. I finished the design of the hive as well as labelling it, for example, the different sections of the hive and their roles of the hive and also the measurements for that section. The design of the hive is important as it gives me a more visual way of looking at the hive, which helps with the construction. For example, this picture below illustrates what I mean..

This type of design will help me get a better picture and idea of the hive and will make it much easier to understand the different parts of the hive when building it.

Although this isn't the same type of hive that I will be designing and this picture is also American, my design of the beehive will be very similar to this, with labels and measurements next to the different parts of the hive.

The picture below is my design of the hive that I will be building, it is complete with labels and measurements that explain in easy to understand detail. I have drawn it like this, with all the different parts spaced out, is because if someone doesn't have experience of bees and hives, this will make much more sense to them and it will be easier for them to understand.

It also allows me to understand the hive more as well, by separating the components I can work through each section as I do when inspecting the hive and so can make sure I have not forgotten anything. It is simple and gives the measurements and is almost like instructions telling me where each part goes.

Also this week I have been practising my cutting and joining skills for one last time before I start to build the hive. Although this week I was mainly practising with the different joining methods, these were joining with nails, wood glue and screws. I was doing this as I wanted to be more confident with my skills before I started to build the actual hive and I didn't want to go in underprepared and make many mistakes.

How this helped me?

This has helped me as I have finally finished the final design of the hive and I believe that I am now ready to start the build as I now have all the measurements of the different sections in place. This week I have also made a design plan for each one of the sections of the hive and these can be seen in the upcoming weeks during the construction of the hive. They can be seen at the start of the post and I will also refer to them when making the hive frame and use them as a method of sorts.
