Week 14 - Milestone 2 - Keep on improving my cutting and joining skills until I am happy and confident with them

Image
This week I was continuing to work on improving my joining and cutting skills. I am not making or joining any practice frames this week but I will be practising all of my joining and cutting skills that I have learned or found out through research. After my discovery last week, I was keen to see what else could be gained from trying different techniques. This will be the last week that I will dedicate to moving my skills up a further level before I will start building my hive for real. I am doing this now because after the expense of the wood and other items I have had to buy, I don't want to make any mistakes when building the hive and find I have cut everything up incorrectly! Dad h as advised that it is always best to measure twice and cut once! There are not many pictures of me practising on wood with my cutting and joining skills as it was just after Christmas that I did these, so I did not do it for long and forgot to take many photos. But below are some of the pictures I too...

Week 13 - Continuing to make a practice frame from the hive

Image
This week I have decided to keep working on and developing                                                     a pr actice frame for my hive; until I am confident in my skills that I will be able to make it for real without any mistakes. When I say 'practice frame' I actually mean a super frame  from the hive. I am choosing to practice this because I believe it will be great practice to get used to the different ways to join and cut wood and will also allow me to learn and see where to improve the hive in many places. I believe that this section is relatively simple to make, (compared to the rest of the parts of the hive) this will allow me to have many attempts at making and practising different cutting and joining methods and ultimately help me decide which will be best for the hive. https://www.hives.online/National_bee_hive_super_box/p3886638_15...

Week 12 - Costs of materials and where to buy them

Image
For my project, I already have most of the tools and materials needed to make my hive, so I will not need to buy many more. But I could still run out at any time and I will need to buy some, so that is why I am researching where to buy these materials this week in case such a situation arises.  Also, I will research where to buy the materials that I don't already have but I will need, to build the hive; these include wood glue, wood and wood paint. I will most likely buy most of the items that I will need from Amazon because it is cheaper for me and is a lot easier as they have a wide range of different items and products that I can choose from. Nails I already have some nails at home that will be enough to complete the hive, but there still is a chance that I could run out and then I won't be able to complete the build if I don't have any nails spare.  The nails I have decided on are these nails shown in the link below. These nails will be the best for my hive making as th...

Week 11 - What Materials are needed

Image
To build this hive from scratch, I will need many materials, such as nails, screws, glues, equipment etc. I will decide on which materials to use from all the research I have conducted on the different materials, for example, week 8 is where I decided which materials were the best to use and why. For this blog post, I will be deciding on the quantities I will need and where to get more, if needed. Nails/Screws For the number of nails I will need, I would assume that around 100 nails would do? I don't believe that I will exceed over a hundred nails for use, as the hive will not many joints and I will also be adding wood glue to reinforce the join. Therefore, I don't believe that I will need as many nails and a hundred nails should be plenty - including the possibility that mistakes could be made. As I am using nails and wood glue, I don't believe that I will require screws. Mainly this is because if I were to use screws I will have to pre-drill every hole, so the wood...
